The youngest children who attend Desert Dawn are the Bunnies. For these young students school is a new and exciting experience. As young as 18 months, some are still in diapers. Teachers work with them and their parents in potty training. Whole group activities are limited to the attention span of the young children. Flexibility is necessary. Most learning activities take place in small groups and learning centers. Social skills are just developing as children move from parallel play to peer interaction. Many activites are designed to develop fine motor skills while outdoor play strengthens the large muscles. Learning centers stress projects that coordinate hand, eye, and mind such as puzzles, building materials, and math manipulative pieces. Children work on number and letter recognition and distinguishing different shapes and colors. As a child's first exposure to school, it is vital to make it a positive experience.
The Goat Room is for children 3 and 4, and the Pony Room is for children 4 – 6 years old and includes our Kindergarten.
